Beginning Teacher Pathway

Beginning teachers adding the endorsement to an initial license must satisfy the requirements for the license, which include 24-36 semester hours in their concentration of either music, theatre or dance.

  • Teachers with a concentration in Music will need 24 credit hours in music courses (12 of the hours must be upper division courses if adding the endorsement to a secondary or Pre K-12 specialty license) and passage of the following PRAXIS exam in Music 5311 from PRAXIS ;
  • Teachers with a concentration in Theatre will need 24 credit hours in theatre courses (12 of the hours must be upper division courses if adding the endorsement to a secondary or Pre K-12 specialty license) and passage of the following PRAXIS exam) in Theatre 5641 from PRAXIS;
  • Teachers with a concentration in Dance will need 24 credit hours in dance courses (12 of the hours must be upper division courses if adding the endorsement to a secondary or Pre K-12 specialty license). This concentration does not have an exam.

Teacher with Existing License Pathway

Teachers seeking to add the endorsement to an existing NM teaching license of any level can either:

  • Music: you will need 24 credit hours in theatre courses (12 of the hours must be upper division courses if adding the endorsement to a secondary or Pre K-12 specialty license) or passage of the following PRAXIS exam in Music 5311

  • Theatre: you will need 24 credit hours in theatre courses (12 of the hours must be upper division courses if adding the endorsement to a secondary or Pre K-12 specialty license) or passage of the following PRAXIS exam) in Theatre 5641 from PRAXIS.

  • Dance:  you will need 24 credit hours in dance courses (12 of the hours must be upper division courses if adding the endorsement to a secondary or Pre K-12 specialty license).

  • Be certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards in performing arts in your respected Music, Theatre, or Dance concentration.

Accepted Performing Arts Coursework

The licensure bureau will review performing arts coursework that includes areas of music, theatre, or dance, with a concentration of 24 hours in one of those areas.
