67     Bilingual Education 

Includes coursework in the areas of Spanish or Native American language,  methods of bilingual education, methods of teaching English as a second language, culture, parent/community involvement, assessment. We accept up to 12 hours of Spanish or Navajo language.  Foreign language is not required if the individual has passed a language proficiency exam, but 12 hours of methodology & culture coursework is still required

Pathway

  • Beginning teachers adding the endorsement to an initial license must satisfy the requirements for the license which include 24-36 semester hours in bilingual education and pass Preuba.

 

  • Teachers seeking to add the endorsement to an existing NM teaching license of any level can either:
    • Pass Prueba, Four Skills Exam or comparable exam and complete 12 semester hours in the teaching of bilingual education that address competencies in English language development, instructional methodology, community/family involvement and assessment; or

    • Pass Prueba, have the TESOL endorsement and earn at least 6 semester hours in the teaching of bilingual education that address competencies in English language development, instructional methodology, community/family involvement and assessment; or

    • Be certified by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards in bilingual education.

 

**NOTE: A bilingual endorsement on a secondary or pre k-12 teaching license must have another endorsement in a subject matter area. The bilingual endorsement authorizes you to teach a subject in another language only.
