In addition to supporting subgrant awards to start and grow quality charter schools , the NMCSP will enable the New Mexico Public Education Department to support the Public Education Commission and local school districts in developing and implementing high-quality charter school authorizing practices. The purposes of high-quality authorizing practices are to maintain high standards for schools, uphold school autonomy, and protect student and public interests.
The following quality charter school authorizing initiatives will be implemented over the five year grant term:
- Develop NM-specific Principles and Standards for Quality Charter Authorizing in cooperation with charter school stakeholders throughout New Mexico
- Implement formative evaluations based on the NM-specific Principles and Standards for Quality Charter Authorizing to support the continuous improvement of all active chartering authorities
- Provide targeted support and technical assistance to all active chartering authorities to support continuous improvement
- Develop tools and processes to support improved annual reporting by all active chartering authorities as required under NMSA § 22-8B-12(G)
Activities to implement each of these initiatives will begin soon. For more information contact Leslie.Kelly@state.nm.us and check back regularly.
