      Completes the 7 hours of required training that enables a new governing body member to vote.

      Course #2017-00001.

      The Governing Body Member Introduction training is required for all new governing board members.  Continuing board members, administrators and other charter school leaders are also welcome, although no training credit will be issued to continuing board members. This training fulfills the seven hour in-person training requirement pursuant to 6.80.5.8(B) NMAC and enables a new governing body member to vote.  Attendees arriving later than 8:40 AM will not be eligible for course credit.

      The Math and Science Bureau at the New Mexico Public Education Department invites public school teachers of grades K–8 to attend one of the sessions offered in the Making Sense of SCIENCE (MSS) School Year Teacher Professional Learning during the 2018–2019 school year.

      Teachers may attend one (1) teacher institute, and preference is given to two (2) or more teachers from the same school.       The MSS Teacher Institutes develop teachers’ content knowledge, instructional skills, and expertise through inquiry-based science learning, collaborative discussion, and a focus on literacy in science. For more information and supporting researching behind Making Sense of SCIENCE, please visit WestEd’s Making Sense of SCIENCE webpage.

      The Making Sense of SCIENCE School Year Teacher Institute is free to teachers, but space is limited. Lodging and mileage reimbursements will be provided to teachers traveling more than 60 miles one way and mileage. A $250 stipend will be provided to teachers who attend and complete the entire 2-day course.

      Registration is limited to one session. To attend the teacher institute, teachers must:

      1. Hold a current New Mexico teaching license
      2. Teach at a public district or state charter school in New Mexico
      3. Teach science courses at the secondary school level (grades 6–12) OR teach science as part of an elementary school curriculum (grades K–5)

      The Math and Science Bureau at the New Mexico Public Education Department invites public school teachers of grades K–8 to attend one of the sessions offered in the Making Sense of SCIENCE (MSS) School Year Teacher Professional Learning during the 2018–2019 school year.

      Teachers may attend one (1) teacher institute, and preference is given to two (2) or more teachers from the same school.       The Making Sense of SCIENCE School Year Teacher Institute is free to teachers, but space is limited. Lodging and mileage reimbursements will be provided to teachers traveling more than 60 miles one way and mileage. A $250 stipend will be provided to teachers who attend and complete the entire 2-day course.

      Registration is limited to one session. To attend the teacher institute, teachers must:

This year the Bureau is offering courses of different lengths: two days, three days, and five days. Teachers and administrators must apply to attend and preference is given to schools with teams of two or more teachers and a school administrator (for the two and three day courses). The MSS summer courses develop participants’ content knowledge, instructional skills and expertise through inquiry-based science learning, collaborative discussion, and a focus on literacy in science, and all of the courses align with the multidimensional nature of the NM STEM Ready! Science Standards.

      The Making Sense of SCIENCE summer courses are free to participants, but space is limited. The stipend is $125 per day and participants must attend the entire course and participate in all aspects. An application to attend is limited to one course. Mileage and lodging is provided for participants traveling more than 60 miles one way.

      Before continuing with this application, please review the information below. This criteria must be met in order to be considered for this event.

      • Applicants must hold a current New Mexico teaching license
      • Applicants must teach at a public district or charter school in NM
      • For 5-day courses only: Applicants must teach science at the secondary level (Grades 6–12) OR as part of an elementary school curriculum (Grades 2–5)
      • For 2-day or 3-day courses only: Applicants must teach science as part of an elementary school curriculum ​OR ​at the middle school level (grades 6–8) OR serve as a school or district administrator applying as part of a school team
      • Applicant is not applying for another June MSS course
      • Applicant has not completed the same course previously
      • Applicant understands that completing the application is not a guarantee of participation
      • Applicant confirms that attendance on all days is required
      • Applicant understands that district/school administrator will receive a notification letter of applicant’s cancellation if with less than one week’s notice

      Dear Superintendents, Charter School Administrators, and Central Office Personnel,

      The Math and Science Bureau at the New Mexico Public Education Department invites you to attend Supporting Science Standards Implementation for Administrators, a professional learning opportunity on Monday and Tuesday, April 29–30, 2019. This two-day course is designed to support implementation by providing administrators with learning experiences of the instructional shifts and discussions of the integrated multiple dimensions of the New Mexico STEM Ready! Science Standards.

      Administrators are encouraged to apply in teams of two or more and to invite their school or district science lead teacher.

      What: Supporting Science Standards Implementation for Administrators
      When: Monday, April 29th and Tuesday, April 30th

      The NM PED will provide mileage reimbursement and lodging for those administrators traveling 60 or more miles for the event.

      This is a mandatory training for new administrators; those new to the profession or new to the state of New Mexico.  The administrators must also be currently working as a principal in a New Mexico public school district or charter school.  The training will serve to certify observers to conduct formal classroom observations for educator evaluation.
