New Mexico Earns $1.2 Million Grant to Help Health Care Professionals Pay off Student Loan Debt
Santa Fe, NM – Today, the Higher Education Department announced that New Mexico has been awarded a $1.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources & Services Administration that will help health care professionals pay off student loan debt.
“Loan repayment assistance is a critical health professional recruitment and retainment tool in rural and/or underserved areas of the state,” said Higher Education Secretary Barbara Damron. “This grant will supplement the state funded program and will allow the Department to fund an additional 12-15 health professionals each year for practitioners working in the neediest areas of the state.”
At $300,000 per year, the Health Professional Loan Repayment Program (HPLRP) grant is renewable up to four years. The purpose of HPLRP is to provide repayment for outstanding student loans of practicing health professionals. As a condition of the program, a health professional must make a two year service commitment to practice full-time in a designated medical shortage area in New Mexico.
Clinicians must be currently employed or have accepted employment at an approved, eligible site in a designated Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA), while providing direct patient care in an eligible discipline. All but one county in New Mexico (Los Alamos County) contain at least one HPSA. For more information on New Mexico’s HPLR program visit http://www.hed.state.nm.us/students/health_lrap.aspx.
