Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham signed the “Grow Your Own Teachers Act” into law in 2019.

The Grow Your Own Teachers Act creates the opportunity for educational assistants to pursue careers in teaching in New Mexico. The Grow Your Own Teachers Act provides funding of scholarships for educational assistants to attend a New Mexico public college or university in order to earn a bachelor’s degree in education and ultimately their teaching license.

The Act also tasks the Higher Education Department and the Public Education Department to survey educational assistants currently working in New Mexico Schools about their experiences, challenges, and expectations regarding this program opportunity.

Follow this link to respond to the questionnaire (  Your participation will assist the State of New Mexico to implement an accessible and effective Grow Your Own Teachers Program.  Your responses will help us to craft the rules, regulations, and processes to best assist educational assistants advance to licensed teachers.

The scholarship will be available to qualified candidates beginning in Fall 2019. Specific details of the scholarship and application process are being ironed out, but candidates will be able to apply for the scholarship through the financial aid office at the institution where they are enrolled on or before July 1, 2019.
