APL I-II Librarian Pathway Information
The Level I Educator Advancement program consists of five micro-credentials aligned with the four domains in Elevate NM, the educator evaluation system. The Librarian Pathway mirrors the regular APL I-II micro-credential requirements except for the second micro-credential, “Foundational Principles in Librarianship,” in lieu of “Assessment Literacy.”
The information and resources in these micro-credentials connect instruction and evaluation by providing learning opportunities that support what “Applying” and “Innovating” teachers do regularly.
You may enroll in one micro-credential at a time and in the following order:
-
- Classroom Environment
- Foundational Principles in Librarianship
- Multi-Layered System of Supports
- Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Instruction
- Family Engagement
Micro-Credential Expectation
Enrolling in the APL I-II Micro-Credential program for licensure advancement supports progress toward professional goals. The program provides valuable information to enhance teaching practices. Success in the program requires maintaining an open, growth-oriented mindset, engaging deeply with the content, and dedicating time to producing high-quality assignments. APL is designed to be inclusive and offers strategies applicable across various grade levels and subject areas. Participants must complete all content and the mastery component within the 12-week timeframe.
Although there are opportunities for refinement and resubmission, investing time at the beginning will be beneficial. It is important to utilize talents and understanding to provide high-quality responses. If there is uncertainty or a question about how the material relates to a specific subject, reaching out to the facilitator or lead facilitator for guidance is recommended. A positive attitude and a growth mindset are essential for success and professional development in this program.
DESCRIPTIONS OF EACH MICRO-CREDENTIAL
Classroom Environment is grounded in designing a physical environment that promotes equitable access to learning for all students and addressing the social-emotional aspects of cultivating a learning environment of respect and rapport. This micro-credential consists of two courses and mastery component assignments. You must complete both courses and the mastery component assignments within the 12-week timeframe. The mastery component module enhances your understanding of key concepts aligned with the Elevate NM Domain 2 Rubric.
Foundational Principles of Librarianship is designed to introduce school librarians to the library profession’s history and ethics and address aspects of daily librarian practice within a school setting. The micro-credential covers the roles and responsibilities of school librarians, emphasizing creating an inclusive, supportive learning environment, upholding intellectual freedom, and promoting equity. It also highlights the importance of leadership and advocacy for the library within the school. Additionally, the program addresses practical library management skills, including cataloging, conducting needs assessments, selecting resources, managing budgets, and maintaining a relevant and accessible collection that aligns with student and curriculum needs. Participants will be asked to reflect upon their practices and identify areas for growth and improvement.
The criteria for this micro-credential is based on the Competencies for Licensure Competencies for entry-level Library Media Specialists (6.64.8 NMAC.)
Multi-Layered System of Supports (MLSS) offers an opportunity to explore the foundational principles, objectives, and organizational structure of the MLSS framework. Throughout the micro-credential, participants will engage with case studies that encourage reflection on their classroom experiences, allowing a deeper understanding of how these concepts can be applied in real-world teaching contexts. As the micro-credential progresses, participants can demonstrate their comprehension and skills through mastery assignments. These assignments are designed to reinforce and expand participants’ understanding of key MLSS concepts, ensuring a thorough grasp of the material by the end of the program.
Culturally Linguistically Responsive Instruction (CLRI) supports two educational approaches educators can implement to address the academic and socio-emotional needs of culturally and linguistically diverse students in New Mexico schools. Culturally Responsive Pedagogy (CRP) and Culturally Linguistically Responsive (CLR) Instruction. The focus is on enhancing educators’ ability to transform their teaching practices to ensure the effectiveness of CLR strategies. The CLRI micro-credential consists of three courses and a mastery component to provide the structure, support, and sustainability needed for CRP and CLR instruction. This micro-credential will equip educators with the knowledge, skills, and insights necessary to serve all students, particularly those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
Family Engagement emphasizes the importance of building solid relationships with families, fostering communication about the instructional program, collaborating on students’ learning progress, and encouraging family involvement in the educational process throughout the school year. Participants will explore their philosophy of family engagement and create varying resources for use in their relationship-building process with families. This micro-credential provides the knowledge, tools, and strategies to establish effective partnerships between educators and families, ensuring that every child benefits from a collaborative team of teachers and caregivers. Family engagement is centered around creating an interactive, relational, and cooperative partnership with students’ families.
Note: Participants must complete a survey at the end of each micro-credential, which must be completed and submitted to receive the enrollment link for the next micro-credential.
