New Mexico’s K-12 social studies standards define what students should understand and be able to do by the end of each grade. The New Mexico Instructional Scope for social studies was created to support educators in deeply understanding the social studies anchor standards and unpacking the social studies standards for each grade level along with other elements or tenets that are part of providing guaranteed, viable, and equitable instruction to all students.
How to use the Instructional Scope for Social Studies:
- Support lesson planning.
- Guide teams to discuss, plan, model, deliberately plan scaffold supports for students, and reflect on common instructional practice during professional learning community discussions.
- Support the implementation of high-quality instruction that meets the needs of all learners.
- Consider how to address learning needs and where targeted scaffolds may be needed to assist students in accessing grade-level core instruction.
- Use side-by-side with high-quality instructional materials.
- Provides teaching support that contributes to equitable classroom structures and assists lesson planning.
- Assists in designing classroom learning environments that minimize barriers and optimize learning for all students.
- Monitor students’ progress on grade-appropriate assignments.
