New Mexico’s Chartering Authorities actively pursue the utilization of charter schools to satisfied identified education needs and promote diversity of educational choices.  They are charged with approving and denying charter school applications, negotiating, monitoring, and executing approved charter contracts; developing and maintaining chartering policies and practices consistent with nationally recognized principles and standards for quality charter authorizing.  is responsible for evaluating charter applications. 22-8B-5.3.

 

National Alliance for Public Charter Schools 

The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools advocates for the millions of public school students attending or hoping to attend a charter school through federal and state advocacy efforts, research, and elevating national awareness for the charter school movement.  Their work educates lawmakers and thought leaders about how charters can meet the needs of communities they serve by providing families with public school options.

The National Association of Charter School Authorizers works to increase and improve quality educational opportunities for children by strengthening charter school authorizing.

Public Education Commission

The Public Education Commission consists of ten elected Commissioners to serve for staggered terms of four years as provided by law. Commission members are residents of the Public Education Commission district from which they are elected. The role of the Commission is advisory to the Secretary of Public Education. The Governor shall fill vacancies on the Commission by appointment of a resident from the district in which the vacancy occurs until the next regular election for membership on the Commission. The Commission is advisory to the Secretary of Public Education and they are the authorizers for all state chartered charter schools in New Mexico.
