Hispanic Heritage Month

The history of Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month

From September 15 – October 15, the New Mexico Public Education Department celebrates National Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month, commemorating the culture, achievements, and contributions of Hispanic/Latino people in the United States. The NMPED honors, supports, and values all Hispanic/Latino employees and community members.

First observed in 1968 as a single week recognized by President Lyndon B. Johnson, the week was later expanded to a full month by President Ronald Reagan in 1988. On August 17, 1988, Hispanic Heritage Month was signed into law through Public Law 100-402.

September 15 also marks the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico celebrates their independence on September 16, and Chile on September 18.
