4/23/24 Update on the status of the grant awards. We apologize for not being able to give you the definitive answers we hoped to yesterday. Just a recap of the entire situation we are facing:
- The Legislature cut our funding 20% for the grant program than we received last year.
- We had a record number of applicants for these grants this year.
- As a result, the grants are more competitive this year than in the past.
- Another result, we have been exploring all options, and this takes more time.
We are looking for the most equitable way to distribute the funding to as many deserving schools as possible. Public Education Department leadership has been involved in this process, and we are close to an agreement on a path forward. This will require compromises to be made. Some applicants will be contacted individually to discuss the proposed budgets, any requested adjustments, and the expectation of braided and blended funding. The braided and blended funding can come from SEG funds, other foundation-awarded grants, in-kind contributions, or any other source that will supplement the community schools grant funding. These will be individualized conversations between PED and the applicants to give appropriate attention to each applicant’s unique circumstances.
We hope this recalibration process will only take a few weeks. Our goal is to make sure you all have budget authority by July 1, and we are confident that we will be able to do that, as long as everyone responds to requests in a timely fashion.
