This page contains information for district/school administrators participating in the New Mexico OpenSciEd Middle School Expansion initiative.
In July 2021, each school received an award memo, granting the school $1,700 per teacher to offset the cost of kits, consumables, lab equipment or teacher stipends. Schools now have access to the funds and should work with their business managers to access OBMS. Please refer to the email sent July 1.
The PED shipped Unit 1 kit materials to all implementing middle school science teachers in May and June 2021. For future kits, schools will order them from AquaPhoenix, the authorized kit distributor. A first step is to ensure AquaPhoenix is on your approved vendors list.
Other states implementing OpenSciEd are hearing of delays in kit orders. We highly recommend starting the ordering process with your science teachers as soon as possible. The units highlighted in the implementation schedule below are next for implementation. AquaPhoenix anticipates 6–8 weeks from ordering to fulfillment of orders.
The PED will cost-share with schools to offset training and materials (kits and lab equipment) costs as part of this initiative. Below is the table outlining the financial commitments:
|PED Financial Commitment (Award Memo)||District/School Financial Commitment|
Provide an award letter of $1,700/teacher/year that may only be used on lab equipment, consumables or kits for the year
Year 1 of the initiative, the PED provided the first kit for all teachers
Training to district-identified facilitators (1 to 3 per district), stipends for off-contract training in units and any facilitator materials every year of the initiative
Average cost of $1,400/teacher/year.
Costs could cover kits, consumables, lab equipment or teacher stipends
Please note: A complete kit has enough materials to support six classes averaging 30–35 students

These monthly check-in calls will start on September 28, 2021, from 4:00–5:00pm. Each monthly PLC is scheduled from 4:00–5:00pm. Sessions will focus on deepening learning on OpenSciEd curricular features and fostering a community of adult learners in school site PLC, based on the needs from the survey.
This is our schedule for the school year:

October 2021 Facilitation Academy:
The Unit 2 Facilitation Academy will occur virtually on Canvas October 25–26, 2021, led by the Dana Center. This two, full-day training will provide unit-specific training for the second unit. Facilitators must attend so they can support your teachers in implementing the next unit. I have reached out to facilitators who have confirmed their participation in the facilitation academy. Below is the professional learning schedule:
Monday, October 25, 2021 9 am – 12 pm, 1–4 pm MT
Tuesday, October 26, 2021 9 am – 12 pm, 1–4 pm MT
Participants will be mailed the hands-on materials from the Dana Center in mid-October and should arrive by FedEx. The Math and Science Bureau will provide participants a stipend for full engagement during the facilitation academy occurring off-contract time or substitute reimbursement for on-contract time. Those teachers and facilitators will receive an email from High Plains Regional Education Cooperative to fill out a W-9 and stipend form to receive the stipend or to submit a substitute reimbursement invoice.
